how do you keep a mask still while moving the layer under it?
i’ve done it before and for what ever reason i can’t remember how.
(say, you have a image moving up the screen, and you want to mask off the top third of the screen. the mask needs to stay stilly while the line moves up the screen and disappears.)

please help restore my lost brain cells.

    thanks

    Hi,

Use a mask layer on top, and set it as a track matte on the layer below. Now you can move and affect mask or fill layer separately.

    Hope that helps,
    Ben

Ben’s technique is definitely more flexible, and I highly recommend it. However, if you ever need to reposition something ‘under’ a mask you can use the pan behind tool (Y) to do so. This keyframes both the position and mask shape so you can very quickly end up with a mess of keyframes, which is why Ben’s suggestion is usually better.
