  • How to Include PDF files with finished DVD

Posted by Scott Forbes on September 4, 2008 at 5:25 pm

I have been a Vegas and DVD Architect user for many years and I have yet to encounter ANYTHING this software can’t do and DO WELL! However, I think I have found something. I am currently producing a DVD with menus & sub menus that will be replicated (2500 copies). My client now wants to include some .pdf files that can be opened and viewed on a computer (on this same DVD). I don’t know what options are available so I’m flexible regarding how the .pdf files would be accessed. I have searched the DVDA manual, but can’t seem to find any information on how to do this. I know this can be done in other programs. What are some efficient and cost effective way(s) to do this other than in Director/Flash, fcpDVD studio, etc.?
    Many Thanks!

Scott, you want to look at using the “Extras folder” feature.
This was added in DVDA 3 or 4 but I was doing it myself even before that.
Create a folder on your hard drive somewhere called Extras and add anything you want to it (PDFs, images, etc.)
When it comes time to burn the DVD, look in the Properties menu where you’ll see a line labeled “Extras folder”.
Browse to where you have this folder and click it.
Now when you Prepare/Burn your DVD, the root menu will have 3 folders instead of the usual two – VIDEO_TS, AUDIO_TS and Extras.
Just remember to make allowances for the size of this folder when your doing your final render.
I did this a few years ago for a 50th college reunion party.
The Extras folder had a pile of images, newspaper articles, assorted PowerPoint presentations and more.
A copy was given to each person attending and they genuinely liked having this feature.
Just make sure to mention it on the DVD label.
I also added a short note on the DVD menu itself.

    mike’s 100% spot on….

been doing it forever, with websites, manuals, additional photos, whatever. as he says.

    a. make sure of your sizes!!!!

    b. make sure you make people aware that there are ‘extras’.

    c. i usually make a note in the opening dvd menu, and how to access them.

Thanks guys for your replies and GOOD ideas! I feel like a dope at this point because I discovered this late last night looking through the printed manual. You can’t find it anywhere in the table of contents or even when you do a search, but IT’S RIGHT THERE under “Getting Started” – “Extras”! It really is a cool feature and adds more production value provided you have enough space. Sony could step up their game a little regarding their manuals, but other than that – I stand corrected – THANKS!
