  • How to identify and find a reference movie

Posted by Leon Johnson on October 9, 2009 at 3:22 pm

Apparently a link to a reference movie was broken, so wondering if there is a way to recognize which of these files exported as reference movies can be found so they can be re-exported as self-contained .mov.

If I can’t figure this out, Apple wants $199 to help me.

Thanks so much for your help.

I always label my reference movies with _ref.
Your reference file will be very small so you can list the folder’s contents by file size.

Links to ref movies cannot be broken unless the file is moved or deleted but links FROM a reference movie are easy to lose if any of the media the reference movie points to has gone offline which happens often with render files.

If you open files with Quicktime and look at the Movie Properties (Cmd-J) and click on the Resources tab, the ref movie will usually have a couple of files indicated, while the self-contained movie will only have itself listed.

Yeah, unfortunately there is no way to tell in the Browser which one is it.

Thanks everyone who responded to this post about identifying reference movie. John, now I just have to re-export as a self contained movie and hope that fixes the error message in DVD Studio Pro:

Searching for movie data sequence 1-FIN-0000077 cannot be found. Without this file the movie cannot play properly.

Until I get the error cleaned up, DVD Studio Pro will not operate. It is in this repeating error loop. Perhaps you guys helped me to save $199 with Apple Professional Apps Support.

[Leon Johnson] “Searching for movie data sequence 1-FIN-0000077 cannot be found. Without this file the movie cannot play properly. “

That is a RENDER file. It might be gone. Render files are routinely thrown in the trash when sequences no longer refer to them. Even if a reference movie does, unless the sequence does, it’s gone.

Best bet would be to export a NEW movie, this time self contained.
