  • How to handle a DPX-sequence in AE?

    Hi all,

    first post, here we go.

I’ve just started a new job, doing online/editing for a production company that makes tv-commersials.

We shoot on digital, RED, Phantom and so on.

I mostly have experience in RED, and I know that we sometimes send LOG-DPX sequence to the Grading. And sometimes we gives our compositors that type of material as well. Sometimes we give them Rec709, Red Space and so on.

My problem starts when everyone else is done. I get DPX sequences from either the Grading company or from a VFX-artist.

How do I set up my after effects project for this? Do I just import it to After Effects and drop it into a comp, or do I change the color manegement somehow? I know the VFX-guys said something about sRGB, but if I just switch my color manegement to that, my colors seems to be off. The colors seems to be right if I just drop it into a comp.

I found an article about how to handle LOG-DPX here on the site, but I guess my files aren’t log.

Hope you can help, thank you.

    /Anders

I hope the VFX guy is kidding about sRGB. That is the smallest color gamut in AE. It’s used for internet graphics, not DPX or RED.

DPX files are a cineon format which are mostly log, but you can export them as standard. It’s very strange to do so, but it is possible.

Simply ask what color profile they outputed and use that in AE. IF they used none, DPX will work fine, and even more precise.

If they really wanted quality, they would go Linear color profile and DPX full range log, but maybe they like camcorder dynamic range.
