How can I make a person “grow” in AE?

I took identical two shots: One just with the “super hero” on the left side of the frame looking up in amazement.

Then (without moving the camera) I paused the recording and removed the super hero and placed the “Villian” on the right side of the frame posing like he’s getting bigger.

Using the the ‘Rectangular Mask” tool I can place these identical shots on top of each other and reveal both actors in the same frame.
I filmed them separately so I can manipulate the “Villian” separately to make him “Grow”.

Only I don’t know how to turn him into a towering giant.

I’m sure there is a simple way but I’m now that adept in AE.

    Can someone please help me?

or maybe I should film the “villian” in front of g green screen thenuse the footage with the “Hero” as the background?-That way the background won’t grow with him…
That would look cheesy though because it wont look like he’s actually standing on the ground.
Isn’t there a way to just single out a specific object in the shot and manipulate it without affecting the whole scene?

Yes there is, it is called rotoscoping or rotosplining, you would have to mask out just the actor or subject and then animate the mask, and if the shot is the same as he grows the “hero” shot will act as the bg for him. If there is a simpler way then i would also like to know, but thats about all i know.

Rotoscoping? I’ve heard this term before but never done it so I’m not sure how to ackomplish it. Is there a tutorial somewhere ? How do I “mask” the actor? The only way I know to mask is using the mask shapes but since my actor isn’t a “rectangal: I think that would be difficult. How do I “Draw” a mask around him and rotoscope him? Then, How do I animate him to grow? Is there a preset for that?

Best explanation and example I know of of roto work. He demos in Commotion but the technique is exactly the same in AE. Look for and watch Rotoscope 1 and 2 on the left side links.

right. then you just scale him up OR in your plate shot (the shot you would put the green screened footage over) you zoom out and leave the giant the same size.
