  • How to get Trapcode Particular to respond to 3D lights

    Posted by Rutger on April 6, 2007 at 11:51 pm

    Hello,

    I know that Trapcode Particular works nicely with the 3D cameras in AE. However, it does not seem to respond to 3D lights (e.g. spotlights) and the result is simply lit uniformly. Does anyone know how get around that? For example, say that I want to have an animation of a flashlight that shines in the dark while it is snowing. Wherever the beam shines I want to be able to see the particles generated by Particular.

    Any suggestions are welcome,

    Rutger

    I don’t think this will work. At least not in the way you want it to. Particular plays nice with AE cameras, as you noted, but lights are a whole different matter. You can make the layer that you’ve applied Particular to into a 3D layer, which would allow it to be affected by lights. However, the lights will treat the layer as a single plane, which is not nearly as elegant as how Particular handles the AE Camera.

    A good approach when staying in AE would be;
    Make your Flashlight’s lightbeam with Trapcode Lux and use it as a Luminance Matte on your Particular layer.
    The best approach would be a 3D-app !

    Thanks for your suggestion. I was afraid that there would be no elegant way of doing it.

    And if i want the particles to cast shadows on a wall or something? is there any solution for that?

    Thanks in advanced,
