Okay so this is probably incredibly easy and i’m going to sound so stupid but thats okay. I accidently clicked something and now when i move my cursor over the timeline i have a little dotted box attached to my cursor. This wouldnt bother me at all except that whilst this little box is attached to my cursor i cannot resize clips. Quite frustrating. how do i get rid of it ! please help !

We all have made the same mistakes learning a new software so you are in good company. What you did what select a different cursor that is used for an area or group selection, hence the dotted box. You want the normal editing tool. If you are unsure as to which one that is hold down ctrl D and you will have it back. Then you can check the help files to understand what each editing tool does. Hope this helps. Happy New Year

Joe already told you how to fix it so I won’t bother.
What you accidentally clicked on was the “Envelope Edit Tool”.
It’s right next to the “Normal Edit Tool” on the toolbar so it’s an easy thing to do.

I could never repay all the debt I owe to those who take time to answer myself and others. Just reading through the many posts is a great way to learn. You are most welcome.
