  • how to get media and clip names the same?

    Hi,
I’m working on a much bigger project on FCP5 then I have ever worked on before. So I’m a little inexperienced with all the challenges it’s presenting.
The DP on the film wants the media file names to match the clip names (scene39take2,etc.) I’m not sure what the reason is for except to be able to find which mediafile represents which clips.
I’m pretty sure I would use media manager under the file menu. But I’m unsure which settings to choose. Do I need to choose ‘Copy’ or ‘Use Existing’. If I choose copy, will it create a whole other project and possibly use up a lot more memory space? From what the FCP manual said, ‘Use existing’ is dangerous because it is irreversible, so i want to make sure it’s the right option first. should I click any of the other boxes? I’m guessing the only one i need to worry about is the ‘base media file names on clip names’ one.
Other info: no editing has been done yet. nothing in the timeline. just original clips in the browser.
If I do this, where will the changes appear? I did a trial on one clip, then looked under capture scratch and saw no changes.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

    Hi Dave,
I guess I should have said earlier: I’m importing from a P2 card and from what I’ve tried it doesn’t seem possible to label the clips before importing them. Only afterwards. So there is where my problem starts.

    Kelly;

Try draging the clips from the P2 card to whereever you store your media.
Once they are on your system, drag them from the “Media Storage” to the browser of Final Cut.
Final cut will take the existing file names when you import the media.

i dont know much about P2 (correction, i dont know ANYTHING about P2!) so maybe you dont need this info…

but to do this with MM:

    use MOVE mode
    DONT delete unused
Base Media File Names on: CLIP NAMES

BROWSE to a location on the SAME drive the clips are already on.

    when you hit OK,
the clips will be moved from the folder they’re in to a new folder:

    Nominated Location/Media/Project Name

and the files names will adopt the clip names in the process.

you wont get, or need, a new project.
the clips will go offline in your current project, but then reconnect.
warning: clips already in the timeline may nor reconnect,
and you may need to reconnect them manually, one by one.

    cheers,
    nick
