  • How to get 1:2.35 aspect ratio. URGENT!

Posted by Luis Artigas on October 31, 2005 at 7:51 pm

    Greetings!
I`ve got a friend, and he’s editing this film that was shot taking in cosideration that it would be cropped in post production to give it a 1:2.35 aspect ratio look, and to do that just by eye percentages would be very risky, I`m sure some of you have rules of thumb to do this, maybe the same rules that you apply to make 16:9 aspect ratios could work, but some guidence is urgently needed please!!
    Thanks

Need some more info, like – what video or film format was the “film” acquired on? Was it shot anamorphic? What is the delivery format? Video? Film? DVD?

    All the best,

Its called the widescreen matte, fcp has had it since its inception….

you can either apply it globally to your cut by applying it to a nested sequence (if your cut is done and you need to output),
or add it to every clip prior to edit (i personally dont like this option, since i cant remove only that effect globally if necessary).

just select type: “2.35:1” in the filters tab.

Use the filter. But if you’re just curious, 16:9 is exactly 75% the height of 4:3. 2.35:1 is in-exactly 56.755% (and change). With SD NTSC video, there are many considerations like non-square pixels, 480 vs. 486, and field dominance when cropping. FCP’s widescreen matte filter automatically takes these things into consideration for you.
