  • How to “Fade” Music Volume Up and Down

Posted by Erin Clark on February 25, 2012 at 1:52 pm

Relative beginner here. I’m trying to adjust the volume of my music track, both up and down, throughout my project. (At various points I need to lower the music volume in order to allow the audio track from my video clips to be heard above the music.) Thus far, I’ve been doing this by splitting the music clip at various points and then adjusting the volume of each clip. This doesn’t allow for any fading, though, (as far as I can tell)and therefore the changes in volume are too abrupt.

The only fading I know how to do requires that the volume fade out entirely, which also doesn’t lead to smooth changes in volume during songs.

How can I make gradual, smooth, fades up and down in volume within a song?

    Thanks for any help!
    So appreicated!

Right click the audio track’s header (far left), then Insert/Remove Envelope, Volume. This will place the volume bar through the track. You can then insert points (double click on bar) where you can increase or decrease segments of the audio (search help: adjusting envelopes).

You can also adjust the overall gain by clicking at the top edge of the audio track and dragging down. This will pull a line along the length of the audio track from beginning to end which adjusts the overall output, then add or don’t add any volume or pan (left/right stereo image) envelopes to the track. You don’t have to adjust the gain, but sometimes it helps with overall presence. You can also “regrip it” and adjust it later or drag it to the top to get rid of it.

BTW, when starting a thread, ask a question rather than a “How to…”. I thought this was going to be a tutorial, not a question.
