  • How to export with a 2:3 cadence?

Posted by Andrew Dietz on December 2, 2009 at 7:51 pm

I have a ProRes HQ file 1080PsF 23.98 that I want to downconvert to SD with a 2:3 cadence added.

My deliverable is an MXF file which I am using the Sony XDCAM transfer tool.

I am dropping the ProRes HQ file into an IMX 30 29.97 easy setup project. When I export this file, I see a 2:2:2:4 cadence added. I also tried dropping that same ProRes HQ file into an NTSC ProRes HQ project, and put it to tape, and it still output a 2:2:2:4 cadence. Finally, I did a downconversion with the Kona3 upon output, and it still output with a 2:2:2:4 cadence.

    Mac OS: 10.6.2
    FCP 7.0.1

The Kona shouldn’t do this. If you use the master HD project sequence at 23.98, and use the Kona to downconvert, it will add the proper 2:3 pulldown. I have done this numerous times.

But FCP will not. FCP does the 2:2:2:4 thing…horrid. If you use Compressor to do this, then you should get the proper pulldown.

How did you do this? The Kona will output 3:2 no problems.

FCP renders in 2224 unfortunately, but compressor will add 3:2 with the proper settings.

*edit, woops sorry Shane, didn’t see you there 😉

I’ve gotten the downconversion to work adding the proper cadence before. I think I’ll go test it on another machine.

It really doesn’t matter anyway because I am adding graphics and stuff and my deliverable is an MXF file. At this point I think my only option is to export as ProRes HQ 23.98, and run it through compressor. Then bring it back into final cut, and export using the XDCAM transfer tool.

2:2:2:4 makes me want to cry.

Not without a plug in. FCP always does 2224, unless you’re working in 720p.

I meant doing a downconversion via Kona3 card.

Got ya. Yeah, Kona card should work. There’s an option to set 3:2 pulldown style, but it’s defaulted to 3:2 (marked 2:3:2:3). It’s in the codec tab.

    Hey guys,

Thought I’d jump in here with a related question: I’m about to deliver some material in SD, uncompressed 29.97, as a quicktime file. My material is 23.98 progressive (from a film source). So I need to do a software conversion to add proper film-style pulldown. In the past I’ve done this with After Effects, since I didn’t think compressor could do proper AA/BB/BC/CD/DD style field ordering. But some of these posts seem to suggest it can? I did some quick test today with no luck. Any tips on the proper settings? I’m using compressor 3.0.5. Thanks!

    Yes, it can.
