  • How to export truly lossless video?

I’ve read lots of debates about achieving this (animation/TIFF sequence/prores etc.) but no definitive answer. How can I export truly lossless video from Premiere Pro CC? I am using a Mac computer.

Yes I think it would need to be some sort of “lossless” image format because anything video will always involve a codec. I’ve never tried it though so can’t verify if/how it would work.

The origin of your source material will determine if something is truly mathematically lossless.

Animation codec at 100% is lossless, but 8-bit. Some would consider uncompressed video to be lossless, but it is 4:2:2 chroma subsampled.

ProRes is “visually lossless” — the pixels values in the encode are not necessarily mathematically the same as the original, but the quality loss is almost always academic and imperceptible.

A DPX sequence would be lossless.

Only way I can think of “lossless” is bit for bit

Playback your source file without exporting it and the only loss will be in the display hardware and the media player.

..so theoretically …its impossible. The source file is beyond the capabilities of the display hardware.

Plenty of options if your need is for Post Production Workflows. eg DPX
