How to export Sequence with specific TIMECODE
Posted by Ariel Brener on January 25, 2009 at 5:11 pmHey All!
I finished a big project for TV – they asked me to hand it with specific TC:
00:58:00:00I changed the “Sequence Zero Point” to 00:58:00:00.
But I don’t see any option in the “Export to tape” window – that I can export the TIME CODE as well.
I have a SONY HVR-M15E DV\HDV DECK.
I SET THE “HDV IN TC” option in the DECK to EXTERNAL.
But all it does it to start fro 00:00:00:00 TC Each time I export to the tape. What to do?
My Client is coming in two hours ! please HELP! 🙂*I need to Export in DVCAM Format.

January 26, 2009 at 11:44 amHi!
You need a tru edit recorder with RS-422 remote control. And there is no HDV deck that can do this what i know of.
You need to step up to XDCAM HD or HDCAM to find a a edit HD recorder.
Can´t you just ftp them a file?

January 26, 2009 at 2:46 pmYou need to set the Deck start time code to 00580000. It’s a menu option I’d guess (I use the M25U.) You’ll probably need the manual if you haven’t done it before.
Although IEEE-1394 could include timecode in it, Neither PPro nor FCP lets you do that – so you have to set the timecode in the deck.

January 27, 2009 at 2:01 amSo you mean that RS422 couldn’t transfer timecode from computer to VTR? You see, I got the same problem. I cannot make specific timecode either. I’m using blackmagic declink SP and my VTR is Betacam SP UVW1800.

January 27, 2009 at 2:15 amI was only speaking about Firewire transfers.
I am not sure about RS422 – I think it controls the deck and makes Timecode accurate edits, but ultimately, what time code is on the tape depends on the deck.
With HDV laybacks using firewire I set the preset on the deck to 00580000 and add 30 seconds of black and 60 seconds of Bars and tones and 30 seconds of black to the time line. There is an offset you need to set, you’ll have to experiment with it to get it right, then do a Record to Tape letting PPro start the deck. For laybacks using RS422 control, you need a tape with time code on it already and then either insert edit the time line at the right point or do an assemble edit as above starting at 00583000 with bars and tones.

January 28, 2009 at 12:48 pmWhat do you mean by “a tape with time code on it already”? I already tried your suggestion but it didn’t work. My Betacam SP VTR just played for a moment but then it stopped by itself. Is it possible coz I already print to tape to the same tape over and over again (since that the only tape that I got)? Do I have to use the new tape? Thx in advance.

January 28, 2009 at 2:48 pmBack in the pre-NLE days you had to stripe (or black) a tape before editing. This required a black burst generator, although if you have black from your timeline going out through firewire or some other connector you might be able to strip the beginning of the tape using the required time code. Then park the deck at say 57:50:00, add a 10 second offset to the sequence start time in your export window, and tell Premiere to export to tape at the current tape position. It is a fudge but short of actual RS422 deck control that is what you have to work with.

January 29, 2009 at 1:22 amSo how I gonna do that? I mean to stripe the tape. Could you tell me the detail? I think I have to use RS422 connector since my betacam SP doesn’t have firewire connection. Or I can do that using betacam SP alone? Just set the timecode to start from 00:59:00:00 in my betacam SP and press record button. Is it simple like that?
Thanks a lot.** Intel Quad Core Q6600, V-Gen 2GB DDR PC-6400, 2TB HDD, View Sonic VX1962WM 19″, Digital Alliance HD 3650 **

January 29, 2009 at 1:43 amYou do it in the deck. You’ll need a manual to see exactly how. You have to set the deck to preset mode and set the time code start to 00580000 or whatever you chose and then press record/play while the deck is getting a black video signal either from a black-burst generator or the computer. You can either “stripe” the entire tape (to insert edit to later) or just the first minute (for an assemble edit.) If you want to do an assemble edit, you have to take the deck out of Preset mode first or you have to start all over. No Beta Deck I’ve ever seen has a firewire port.
