  • How to export alpha channel losslessly from Premiere Pro to After Effects?

Posted by Cesar Siena on March 29, 2013 at 8:03 pm

I have an animated gif (with transparent background) that “doesn’t play” in After Effects, so I used Premiere Pro to copy several instances of it in a row to make a little movie of it. I exported it as lossless QuickTime (mov) with PNG codec. When importing it in After Effects, it doesn’t read the transparency, as if there wasn’t alpha channel in the little movie. How to preserve that transparent background in this operation? Thank you!

Put your gif on V2 in Premiere Pro before you export and see if the transparency shows…

Also, try QuickTime > Animation codec at 32-bit setting for export with alpha, that has worked for me

Just went back and tried this…it appears that moving the clip up per my suggestion makes no difference (there have been times when it’s been the difference for me in the past…)

Jeff’s suggestion is the best one here…it’s likely the difference between exporting as 24 bit or 32 bit (32 bit adds an 8 bit alpha channel).

Hi Jeff, it worked! Thank you very much! I just wonder why After Effects doesn’t read the transparency of the other QuickTime (mov) in PNG lossless codec, if, indeed, it had transparency and if the other video product of the same company (Adobe’s Premiere Pro) read its transparency without any problems. Thank you again! Best regards!

Hi Tim! Thank you for your support and ideas! I’ve just tried Jeff’s tip and it worked, but I thank for all the support!

Yes, you are right! I needed the 32 bit to add the alpha. As I told Jeff, I just wonder why After Effects doesn’t read the transparency of the other QuickTime (mov) in PNG lossless codec, if, indeed, had transparency and if the other video product of the same company (Adobe’s Premiere Pro) read its transparency without any problems. Thank you both again! Best regards to you guys!
