How to emit Objects from a mesh emitter
Posted by Eric Pereira on April 23, 2025 at 3:57 pmI am trying to emit particles from a mesh emitter surface from an object and have other objects be the emitted particles in the render.
I know I could always do this with the legacy emitter and a cloner, but I cannot do it with the mesh emitter. I tried using a matrix object first and then cloning onto the matrix, but nothing I do seems to render objects in place of the emitted particles.
Can anyone figure this out?

April 24, 2025 at 10:32 amHi Eric,
You are supposed to be able to do this using the cloner as you can see in this tutorial at 2:17 but it didn’t explain how to do it so I doubt there is still a problem with that especially since the tool is relatively new and what made me suspicious is that even in the Presentation video for the tool on Maxon’s website they didn’t talking about that.

April 24, 2025 at 4:24 pmI am actually using Arnold to render, and I’ve found that i need to apply an arnold tag to the particle group itself rather than the emitter object to get it to render anything.
I’m wondering now if I need to either set the Cloner Object to apply to the particle group as well, or maybe I’ll try arnold scatter on the particle group.
I am trying to get to use the effectors to randomize rotation.

April 25, 2025 at 7:36 amJust to let everyone benefit from your experience, I think the first problem was that objects weren’t showing up instead of particles in the viewport even before rendering, right? Then you got around that using cloner and now you’re wondering about rendering all of that on Arnold, please correct me.

April 25, 2025 at 3:55 pmUsing a Cloner object with the object set to the Particle Group actually does let the emitted objects show up in the viewport and render. Before, I was trying to set the object as the Emitter itself, which is incorrect.

April 25, 2025 at 8:47 pmOk, so I’ve realized that in addition to using the Arnold tag on the particle group–which gives very limited control to what object is emitted in the render and the basic properties–using a Cloner object with the object set to the Particle Group actually does let the emitted objects show up in the viewport and render. Before, I was trying to set the object as the Emitter itself, which is incorrect.
I don’t believe (at least with the version I am using) Arnold Scatter allows working with Particle Groups yet. I was not successful with that. It might work if I try updating Arnold.

April 26, 2025 at 7:12 am“Using a Cloner object with the object set to a Particle Group actually allows the emitted objects to show up in the viewport and render” This is what I wanted to confirm because after some searching there is currently no tutorial explaining how it works, although it is obvious that users would ask about this, so I wanted to make sure that it works for you too using the cloner so that we can have a baseline around this to benefit others. Thank you very much for your response! As for rendering on Arnold, I do not have much experience with it, but I hope you find what you are looking for in the update.
