  • how to edit and output 24p and 25p footage on the same timeline.

    Hi,
I shot some footage using 2 different cameras and want to edit them in the same sequence.
CAmera 1 is a canon 7d, shot PAL 25p at 1080. I import it to fcp using log and transfer and the eos plugin that turns it into pro res 422 footage,
The other camera is a panasonic hpx 170 and is shooting at 24p at 720. I am importing that using the p2 plug in from the log and transfer window. It is compressing into ‘native’ format.

Both sets of footage are for a music video, so the music track will be overlaid after. Hence, there are no synching issues with words.

So, my question is a) Do i need to conform either of the footage to the other? ie, should i conform my 24p to 25p. and using what program? cinema tools/compressor? b) If I don’t conform the footage, then what would my sequence setting be? currently it is pro-res 422 at 25p.

and lets say i conform my 24p to 25p, do I need to also compress it as pro res 422 footage?

    Any help would be appreciated.

You can not go the conform way for a music video.
When you conform 24 to 25, the movie is speed up a 4%.
When you conform 25 to 24 the movie is slowed down a 4%.
Whatever the way, you end up with two movies of different length.
You need to convert the time-base of one of both footage.
You can do it in Compressor.
You can try to edit both in the same sequence, but this is not a task where FC shows him self very brilliant.

Hi there and thanks for your response.
I am trying this in compressor as we speak and will get back to you to see if I have my compressor settings correct and whether the lip sync will match.

Adnan, what did you end up doing?

I’m in Europe and have Canon 7D 1080 footage shot 24p, and Canon XL2 SD 16:9 footage at 50i. Editing in Final Cut (latest). Need to output as a SD DVD PAL. Any tips? Thanks.
