  • How to Downconvert BEFORE I edit?

Posted by Bill Thomas on January 23, 2008 at 4:33 pm

I am shooting at 720P60 and have successfully ingested P2 material and edited with the correct sequence. I’m using the IO HD and am using the 720P59.94 FCP settings.

Here’s my question: I know that I can edit in 720p widescreen and downconvert thru IO HD to 525. But what if I want to downconvert the footage BEFORE I edit it? Is there a setting in FCP to do this?

The main reason is that I have a lot of old SD footage that will make up the majority of my edit, yet I wanted to shoot in HD for future all-HD edits. And I noticed that in a 720 Sequence I have to render every single SD clip I put in there. Since this edit is ultimately going to SD anyway, I’d like to save time by editing in SD and save the render time (and drive space).

    Thanks in advance…

Run footage through Compressor and Use the Advanced Format Conversion (or similiarly named tab)

Can I run it thru Compressor as an MXF or do I need to convert it to Quicktime via FCP?
