How to do titles
I’ve been using BCC Calligraphy to do my titles. They look like they’re going to come out great, but then are all pixelated after encoding. I’m encoding at the highest rate I can, and I saved out the file to be encoded as QT Animation, as I was told this was the highest quality for titles.
Obviously, there has to be a better way to do titles for DVD. Can you guys tell me what you use?

Do you have your canvas set to 100% and are you rendering the picture?

Absolutely. They all look great until they’re encoded.
BTW, I misspoke when I said I was using Boris Calligraphy. It’s actually Boris Titles 3D.

Also, I misspoke again a bit. The titles generated in Boris look great rendered. The .psd scroll looks bad even just rendered.
I have another problem. I looked at the scrolling .psd file.It has 3d text (text with embossing and drop shadows), as well as the leads underlined, hence Camera (underlined) Joe Schmoe (non-underlined). So I think this would be rather difficult to reproduce if I had to abandon the .psd.

Hi Jeffry,
Change your sequence codec to 8b Unc or ProRess and render a little to see how your graphics looks.
Unless you are going to print to DV tape, avoid to render to DV.

This is a screenshot of the .psd rendered using the u8 codec:
and here’s one of it rendered using the Animation codec:
As you can see they both looked terrible. But they also looked to me like it may be as simple as an interlacing issue. So here’s the last test, u8, Field Dominance set to None:

So now, a far simpler question. Which is going to give me higher quality for DVD output, u8, or Animation, or something else, perhaps?

These are truly dreadful titles for video. They will look terrible on DVD. The contrast is too low to be easily legible and the font is dreadful, with far too thin serifs for encoding into a highly compressed format like MPEG-2, not to mention the thin horizontal lines that will vibrate as the scroll tracks upward.

Absolutely agreement with Tom.
This is the kind of fonts that will complicate your life whatever the application you use.
Two more things:
– Don’t render in Animation (RGB) when you are going to a DVD (YUV).
– In the Boris 3D Control tab, check the “Deflicker 1.2.1” button.
It helps when scrolling texts.

I second all of Tom’s comments. Dreadful choice of fonts and colors for video.
