How to do this?
I’m working on a shot like this for a client. I suggested they provide vector artwork and I manually orient the elements (dots) which make up the image along the z-depth. I’m not shy of hard work! Then obviously I would pull the camera into the array of dots…..
However, After Effects has choked on the 5990 (I kid you not) layers. Is there a sensible work-around or (blushes) a plug-in that will enable me to achieve this effect?

I’d use a particle system — you might try Trapcode Particular or Form.

thanks walter. i have licenses of both but tend to use maya for my particles.

Check out Aharon Rabinowitz\’s tutorial on Text to Sand. You could adapt this, with larger particles, and moving in the Z-axis.
