  • How to do Side By Side / Split Screen

Posted by Darren Macnally on February 12, 2014 at 1:42 am

Hi there, I’m looking to replicate this style of video: (up until the first 30seconds)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pt_dkQK1LQ

Lets say I have 2 videos, A road on a sunny day, and the same road on a snowy day.

I want the sunny day to be on the left and the snowy day on the right. However I want each video to be halved.

So, It looks like the road has snow on one half and sun on the other. I would also like to be able to dynamically shift the border like they do in that video above, however this isn’t that important.

Currently, I can’t get it to work because when you crop a video to just its right side, the truncated part will appear in the center of the final video.

Any help on the best method to do this?

    Thanks

    Track1 – Sunny Day Event

    Track2 – Snowy Day Event

Sunny Day Event > Open PanCrop and apply rectangular MASK to LEFT HALF of the Event

Keyframe the MASK to move Left where you want the Snowy Event to be revealed.

    Done!

    Grazie

Seems like you have it yeah, but your explanation was so simple I can’t imagine I didn’t try it! I didn’t just run to the forums with the first problem I came across, I was stuck on this for a long time experimenting the pan/crop settings etc.

Anyway, I’ll try it when I get home from work in a few hours and post my reply if it works (or if it doesnt), thanks for the help

Thank you that was it, the mask. I never noticed it before I guess.

I’m using Sony Vegas Pro 12. Thank you very much, a great help

Yeah, that’s why I asked which version, ‘cos it hasn’t been available in ALL versions of Vegas.

The Masking Tool in VP12 has come on by leaps and bounds. Have a play with it. You can now do zillions of things with it now.

    Cheers

It’s a useful 3rd party plug, I own it too. Our colleague here wanted to use the Vegas toolset. The balance on this forum is where to suggest “another” additional 3rd party or not. I could have used this plug or another – there are several – or attempt to get a reply which uses the already available Vegas Toolset our colleague has, which work.

Graham, thank you for this explanation, but I’m not quite grasping what to do. I have turned on masking, and created a rectangle mask. But I don’t understand where to grab it to move it? A video tutorial would be most helpful, not just a video of the final result. My goal is to not show one side of Video track 1, but instead replace that side with Video track 2. I don’t need to animate the mask, just have it in place, very near the center of the screen. Thank you Sir for your time, and assistance.

Wow, this Post was 8 months old! Hi Rob, unfortunately The COW is going through changes. One result is that we can’t post Videos, or even ScreenGrabs.
