How to do picture-in-picture? Argh!
I’m trying to do something that seems simple, but am really frustrated.
I have some footage of a martial-artist doing a routine in front of his crowd and his instructor. I’d like to show the artist in the foreground and the instruct in a little “picture in picture” bubble in a corner of the frame.
Seems simple. I took my footage, motion-tracked the instructor (to stabilize her in the frame), then applied the tracker as a stabilizer to the original footage. Everything looks good – the instructor is pinned in one location and all is good.
I then tried adding a mask around her. Only my mask seemed to be pinned to the original scene, not the stabilized one (so it moved eratically around the frame). Doh!
So I tried adding a new solid layer and putting a mask on that. This seemed to work (at least I got the instructor in a bubble in one location in the frame, with the rest of the field being a solid color).
I then added a new composition to my project and tried adding the previous comp as an element to the new comp…but my mask didn’t show up…just the stabilized footage. Doh!
I tried pre-composing the comp, but got the same result.
Help! Any suggestions?
(I’m using AE CS4, if that influences the answers…)

There’s several different ways to achieve this, but here’s a simple one.
i) Place your main footage as the bottom layer.
ii) Put your stabilized footage above it.
iii) Draw a shape layer in the shape of your bubble. This layer should be directly above your stabilized footage.
iv) Set the track matte of your stabilzed footage to Alpha Inverted. And bang! There’s your PinP.Cheers,

i think you’re on the right track… here’s how i would have done it.
bring the pic-in-pic footage in to a new comp and stabilize the footage (as you did). but then, to crop the shot, i think i’d just change the comp size. open the comp settings (composition>comp settings) check the box to lock aspect ratio and then set a smaller comp size to crop the footage.
then drag the full frame shot into a new comp, add the pic-n-pic comp then scale and position it as needed.
