How to — director’s commentary track
How do you go about making a commentary track for your film? I have a feature length film that I sell through a company called CustomFlix and I want to make a director’s commentary track for it. Does anyone have advice on how to do it? Thanks! PS – CustomFlix didn’t have any advice for me. They are just a print-on-demand service.

Sure- it’s pretty easy. You watch the movie and record audio to another file and then add as an alternate track in DVDSP. Make sure frame lengths match so you start in sync.

If you want to get fancy you can create a new audio mix on your favorite NLE by bringing in the original soundtrack and then recording the director’s comments. Then you mix the two, making sure to bring the soundtrack down when the director is about to speak and back up when he’s quiet for more than a few seconds. Then render the results into a new into Dolby Digital and bring it into your authoring program. Having a commentary track adds a great deal to a project, in my opinion.
