How to delete clips from FCPX & the External harddrive
Previously when i used to delete footage, i would just delete the footage from FCPX and it would also be removed from my external.
Recently i have noticed that when i delete from FCPX, its deleting from FCPX and the files are still stored on my hard drive. I had to manually go through all the clips on my hard drive and delete them accordingly. I must be doing something wrong or have a setting that incorrect.
I import directly from the cameras SD card to the hard drive through FCPX. No proxy media. When i want to delete, i go through my library, two finger click the clips and select move to trash. I then empty my trash. This made no impact on my Hard drive space and after more research, i found that months of files that i thought were deleted were still stored on my Hard drive. i had to do the deletion again manually on the Hard drive itself.
First question: How should i be deleting the clips correctly so they are moved off both FCPX library and Hard drive
Second question: Any advice on how to do a mass deletion of clips that im not using anymore.

Difference is where the original clips are stored. If “internal” to the library, deleting them from FCPX will delete them from the system. If “external” to the library, deleting them from FCPX only deletes the reference to them, but not the actual file. You would have to go Finder and delete them manually to remove them from the system.
Someone in another thread from a few weeks ago pointed me to Final Cut Library Manager by Arctic Whiteness. Might be helpful in seeing what’s where and how to free up space.

I thought that by me importing from the cameras sd card through FCPX driectly to a library linked to my hard drive( external hard drive). Wouldnt that make it an internal import? Would you be able to provide the steps as how to import internally. That would be a great help!

Yep, you got it! SD card will always ‘Copy to library’ (little radio button in the Media Import window). No option to ‘Leave files in place.’ This is true whether importing direct from the card, an Archive of the card, or a folder of the card (if you did a Finder drag and drop from the card to a HD). [**Note: it’s possible this behavior may change for different codecs on an SD card, so I say “always copies, no option,” but that’s limited to my experience–mostly AVCHD.]
After import (or ingest if you prefer), you can change where files are stored (internal or external) from within FCPX by going into Library Properties and change via Storage Locations -> Modify Settings.
Non-SD originating media will give you the option to import by either copying the media to the library (internal to the FCPX library) or leaving files in place (external to the library). There are pros and cons to each method, but my encouragement would be to find a workflow that works best within your setup and then be consistent. A consistent approach to media management is a key component to keeping yourself organized (i.e., finding and moving stuff later).
