  • How to cut AVCHD into clips without recompressing

I have a Sony NXCAM which records in AVCHD format (.mts)

I can easily bring it into the Vegas Pro 10.0c timeline and edit it.

I would like to simply find some highlights, save the highlight clips in the same format and minimize recompression effects.

Every codec choice I have tried seems to recompress it. I am saying that based on the lack of the NO RECOMPRESSION Required notice in the preview window.

Is there a codec or choice that will mininize the change?

Not in Vegas. Vegas does not “smart render” AVCHD so nothing you do with produce the “no recompess” scenario.

There is a very crude tool called tsMuxer that will split streams without re-encoding but you have to specify the in/out points as timecodes. So it’s not very user friendly or accurate because it will only split on I-frames. I use it to cut commercials out of DVR recordings without re-encoding the file but you need patience to use it. 😉

    Thanks John,

That tool sounds like too much work for the return.

I also am trying to render in hd mov to give to a FCP user.
When I choose MOV as the output, it compresses it.

Is there a setting that will render it in whatever is 1920x1080x60i for editing in FCP?

No. You will have to make a template for that. The recommended method is for both you and the FCP editor to download the free Avid NDxHD codec and for you to make a QuickTime template that uses that video format. If the FCP editor doesn’t wan to install any new codecs, then you can create a QuickTime template using Photo-JPEG video format. This is the format that most stock footage companies use to deliver HD stock footage in a QuickTime container. It should work fine for your purposes.
