  • How to crop but CUT unwated video out? (Vegas Pro 12)

Hi guys, quick question, I’ve tried googling but as you can image all the results are for a normal crop.

What I want to do basically is crop a video but literally cut the unwanted video out, eg: I shot a video in 4:3 and had the top of the screen taped off to 16:9. Now I would like to crop the video to 16:9 but completely removing the top part, so it’s natively 16:9 (I don’t want a 4:3 image with black bars)

    Hope that makes sense.

    Thanks

Very simple. Make sure that your project settings are 16×9 (e.g. 1280×720 or 1920x1080HD or 720 x 480 widescreen). Then drag your 4:3 clip onto the timeline, open the pan/crop setting and select 16×9 TV setting as your preset. You will see the outline of where it will be cropped. At this point you can move it up or down and still maintain a 16×9 output without black bars. While this will “work” you will lose resolution, which will be especially noticeable if you’re using SD footage. It will look pretty “terrible” IMHO. For SD footage, I feel its always better to add a background on the track below so that the quality of the original footage is maintained. Just an opinion.

Hi Wayne, thanks for the response. I’ll try it tonight.

It was filmed in SD 640×480

Still will work…. That’s one of the features i love about Vegas, how
it automatically handles and fits aspect ratios.
