  • How to created dashed line stroke?

Posted by Trevor Ward on March 6, 2007 at 4:48 pm

I know how to animate the stroke of a line. But what if I want that line to be dashed. I’d like controls like in Illustrator that let’s me control the parameters of the dashed line. Am I forced to create the lines in Illustrator and them import them into AE? then is there a good way to animate the dashed line to look like it is being “drawn” on the screen?

    Dashes, no. Dots, yes.

For dots, play with spacing in Stroke and Write-on, or Analog dots in Audio Waveform.

For revealing (writing/drawing a dashed line) see these tuts for using on your imported AI files:

Draw a mask over the dashed lines and copy the mask and paste the mask shape into the “write on” effects’ position property.. then select ‘reveal original source’. Change your spacing to .001 and adjust your brush size to match the thickness of the dashed line.

    “kis” it

    Another way is to use Text on a path with the text “- – – – – – – – – -” etc.

That way you can use Font-controls like Tracking to change the spacing, and still animate the shape of the path.

Each “-” will be a straight line segment though, but you might get awat with it.

This one is good and easy since I can stay in one application. Thank you. It’s only draw back is making a dashed line along a path. Still doable with masks, but not quite as pretty as in illustrator.

I don’t know if this is a new feature or not, but in After Effects you can just use the Pen tool and create a path. Then, you can change the path settings inside the shape stroke. I wanted like a cloth stitch effect, so I used a stroke width of 4.0, then I clicked the + button next to Dashes to set Dash @ 18.3. Click the + button one more time and you can change the Gap to 14.0. This gave me the effect I wanted and you can animate it as well.

Go in your shape settings for your layer, Your Shape Layer–>Contents–>Stroke–>Dashes
