How to create this trail effect ???
Hey Everyone,
Looking for good suggestions for how to re-create this effect. I’ve found a few ways to achieve it but they are ALL highly time consuming and really don’t seem efficient. Maybe there are some out of the box solutions or a quick and dirty expression?
It’s taking the trail effect one step further leaving them opaque and having them grow and change colors. . .

Have you tried Trapcode Particular?
I know it seems like a common response from me, but I think it might work for you. You could set the emitter to a layer emitter, using your video footage, and then also set it as a custom particle. I think you can also do color and opacity over time.

i think you could also use a time effect like echo to create the trail, if you are using keyed video like the basketball player. it is more or less designed to composite previous frames on frames to create a trail like effect.
to colorize the silhouette you could use the set channels effect setting red to full and green and blue to off.
to change the silhouette color over time, you could keyframe the change color or change to color effect, hue/saturation or any number of color adjusting effects.
then apply echo to create the trail, setting the echo time to be a 1-2 frame duration (in seconds), the number of echoes pretty high (maybe in the hundreds), and the operator to composite in back (you could experiment with others).
to get the keyed video back on top, apply cc composite set to composite original in front.
