    Hi,
    I have AE CS3 (Win).
I have some green-screen footage of a guy pretending to swim (he’s actually on top of a green box- good old superman trick).
I want to animate the figure so that he appears to swim from one side of the screen to the other, and I cant seem to get a realistic motion…
Can I do something like motion track one of the kicking feet and use the keyframes to convert to a linear motion across the screen?
This would link the movement of the figure with each kick of the feet.

    Alternatively any other ideas?

Many thanks, Im not highly experienced with AE
(PS- Loving Keylight, though- its better than chocolate!)

If you calculated his movement based on the kicking motion, it still probably wouldn’t look realistic, as it wouldn’t account for things like water resistance. If I were you I would just try and watch some footage of someone swimming and just use keyframes to simulate it. You will want to use a bezier curve for the temporal interpolation of the keyframes, enable the graph view for the position property, then switch the composition into graph view mode so you can manually tweak the curve of the temporal interpolation.

There should be a quick ramp off the start of the kick, and it should more slowly ease into the end position. It will take a little tweaking for a realistic look.

I’ve done a mermaid (actually a girl in a salmon costume)bobbing, floating, swimming underwater, and hovering over a redd.

It was all done with motion paths in AEv5.5. Not easy but not difficult. Once I got the first scene done, the rest were fairly direct. The secret for me was creating a proxy for the salmon character so test renders were nearly instantaneous.
