  • How to create correct caption format, CEA 608 vs. 708

Help! I have gotten myself into a bit of a mess. I have created captions in Premiere Pro CC in CEA 608 format for broadcast on a local HD TV station. However, I am reading different posts about how you are supposed to have both CEA 608 and 708 files. The station has not given me any information about what they need.

    1. Is there a way I can automatically convert the 608 format to 708? I don’t see a way to do this except by doing the entire thing over again… Or can I just provide the 608 and hope they know what to do with it?

    2. If I am able to convert the 608 to 708, I was asked to provide a DNxHD file with the captions embedded. How would I do this? Do I have two separate tracks of Closed Captions on my Premiere timeline then export the sequence like that?

Did you ever get an answer to this? I’m having a similar problem where my client wants to review my captioning but I created it in CEA-708 and now need to convert it to CEA-608 so I can export a QT movie where they can display it.

I never got an answer, but I ended up hiring someone at Captions and Subtitles Services (AngieNRussell@capsubservices.com) to make sure the proper format was delivered to the broadcast station. I was only charged $50.

I’m going to end up doing it over in CEA-608 but I’m not going to use Premiere this time, someone pointed me to this which is very affordable. It appears to do CEA-608, I’m not sure about 708 but the developer is part of this board so maybe he’ll see this: https://www.synchrimedia.com/ It’s called MovieCaptioner. There is also a free ebook that provides lots of helpful tips. Bummer it can’t just be a simple selection from 608 to 708 and vice versa.
