How to Create Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights)
Was asked ‘…could I create aurora borealis in AE?’ recently. I
said ‘Yes’ because I presume it’s quite easy, especially with
Trapcode. I’m interested in other (more DIY) methods of producing
it though, because the client has AE on his Mac but isn’t trained in
Trapcode, so it would be nice to give him a project file he was able
to tweak willy-nilly post-sign off.Cheers,

I di this in Boris Red years ago…I wrote a tutorial on it which is here on the COW….
Now, if I were to do it again in AE, I would use solids, masks, turbulent displace, blur, fractal noise and a displacement map.

Well recently was looking to do the same thing and after much fiddling around without much success found a nice project file at https://www.trapcode-people.net/index.php
Think it’s one of the last ones listed so dig deep and enjoy.

Ah, I forgot about the Trapcode People archive. But like I
said, I may end up doing it the hard way (because I sure
ain’t given the client a copy of Trapcode for free) – so
