How to create an explosion in clouds?
Hey guys,
I am trying to create an animation with a dust storm and a flash bang like explosion in the center almost exactly like the one in this video at 1:43-1:47 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBpK_c6ayig. How could I replicate the growing black smoke and the thick, ring-like explosion? I’ve tried multiple particle systems and turbulent/fractal noise but haven’t been able to come up with an effect that is like the video (appears to crawl out as it expands, and is not very thick).

I just picked up a Houdini Indi subscription a couple months ago.
It has a steep learning curve but it’s very much worth it. If you can live with 780 you can try the free version.explosion and smoke effects are some of it’s key uses.
They have a lot of quick startup tutorials to get you going and the results are awesome.

Get the basic movement you want out of a particle effect then use other effects like CC Vector Blur to really tweak the look.
