May 7, 2007 at 1:59 pmIf you are on Windows, these kinds of things can be done using ULTRA which is a Serious Magic technology now owned by Adobe (and which will be in the next CS3 bundle).
If you are on a Mac, add a PC to your studio and look at a product called ULTRA, or buy an Intel Mac, add Parallels or Bootcamp, load Windows and look at ULTRA.

May 7, 2007 at 2:58 pmHere’s another alternative, also Windows based: VJ software with a video capture/output card. There is one I tried a long time ago which outputs via the video capture card, in real time, all those looping graphics just by drag-and-drop. Can’t recall the name though. Just google for ‘VJ software’.

May 7, 2007 at 8:41 pmThe opener “idol” singer in the American Idol title (that sort-of rhymes), the metal looking dude, is actually a 3d model done in 3dsmax, so… no you can’t do that in AE. Go buy a copy of C4D or 3dsmax and congratulate yourself on taking the plunge into true 3d modeling. I use C4D, it’s easiest to learn and less expensive than 3dsmax. Good luck. Hey, if you get it, you could use your new found skills for all sorts of fancy fun titles too!
oh, and yes the final composite will be in AE, but the source material was what I assumed you were asking about. -
