How to create 2D “absorption” effect in AE
Hey everyone! I’m creating a graphic for an Indiegogo video, and I was wondering how I would go about making an absorption effect that makes it look like a large central circle is “swallowing” a ring of smaller circles around it. As a perfect example, here’s a promo video for Squarespace. At 1:20 they have a graphic showing Squarespace spitting out and then reabsorbing a bunch of logos:

Any tips on which tutorial videos to check out or effects to play around with would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You have to create the Center Circle with a Circular mask on a Solid. Then you can add the vertex(say 2 or 3) from where small circles will enter and animate the Big Circular mask by Keyframing its Mask Path parameter.
Go through this article about Animating Mask Shapes.
Also there is small feather when the small circles merge with the center one. If you have CS6 there is an option to add feather with the new feather tool.I am not at home right now but will surely create an example after getting back.

Thanks Vishesh! I’ll read through all the Adobe info about animating mask shapes. And yes I have CS6 so I’ll look into utilizing the feather tool as well. Thank you for offering to make a simple example, if you end up having time that would be a great thing for me to learn from – Alex

Here is an example that I have created:

I was using my laptop so its a CS3 version file and there is no feather around the mask when the absorption takes place. But you can use that feature in CS6.

Your little demo is perfect, I know what to do now. I’m sure I learned about keyframing mask layers in the tutorial series I took, but clearly I forgot all about it haha. Thanks again! – Alex

It is not possible to remember everything all the time. Just brush up the basics on regular interval. It would help a lot.
