  • How to convert Canon AVCHD to dVCPROHD?

Posted by Tom Duncan on January 14, 2009 at 1:26 am

Panasonic has a utility but it doesn’t work with Canon’s version of avchd. I have a multi-camera shoot with mixed cameras that need to be made into a multiclip.

Can you suggest a utility or workflow to do this?

    thanks in advance.

You will probably have to buy Canon’s decoder program for the MAC for about $100.00 (free on Windows). I have a client with the same problem using PPro CS4.

Dual 2.5 G5, IO, Kona LH, IO, Medea Raid, UL4D, NVidia 6800, 4Gig RAM
Octocore 8 GB Ram, Radeon card, MBP, MXO
Windows Vista Adobe Studio CS4, Vegas 8.0, Lightwave 9.3, Sound Forge 9, Acid Pro 7, Continuum 5, Boris Red 4, Combustion 2008, Sapphire Effects

Can you post more specific information on Canon’s codec for the Mac?

One solution. I’ll post more when I get the Canon info.

    Tom,

I had a similar issue with AVCHD and found this thread on the Cow:
    https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1015813

I have Toast 9 and was able to convert my clips into ProRes422HQ with no problem. You should be able to use Toast to convert to any codec you have installed on your machine.

    Cheers,
    Jamie

Thanks for the input everyone. I didn’t mention I had already brought the avchd into FCP via ProRes, but I was hoping to avoid an intermediate step.

Scoured the web and have not found any mention of a utility that will do it directly. Looks like AVCHD to ProRes to DVCPROHD is the only option, (or capture component direct to a high end card which I don’t have).

The problem I have now using Compressor converting to DVCPROHD is the frame rate. The DVCPROHD is shot with 24pA. (30P with advanced pulldown to 23.98 ?). The ProRes is 29.97

How do I get Compressor to match that so I can eventually use these together in a multiclip?
