    Help,
I have a deadline on a 8 min sales video that I shot on beta sp and captured and edited using 8-bit uncompressed codec thru aja i/o, in fcp 4.5.. Aside from some sizing issues, which were corrected, the finished timeline video looks great. That is until I try to compress it with compressor to finish to dvd studio pro 3.0. I have tried almost every setting with the same result. Compression artifacts littering my burned dvd on playback. To make things worse when I try to lay off to tape(beta sp) through the aja I get some strange tearing and other video break up on the tape.

    Please help!
    Mike

Well, what sizing issues are you talking about? I think that you have resized a 720×486 signal to a 720 x 480 signal and you are getting break up. If the video is coming out bad on your beta, then it’s going out bad to compressor.

Tell me exactly what you did with the “resizing issues” and we’ll go from there.

By sizing I mean each clip had 5% of black along top and bottom after capture at 720×486. I adjusted the clip scale accordingly to cover frame, However, when i use idvd compression for client approval the video plays fine. Some of the lower third text is “blurry” according to client. So I figure the compression agent in compressor and studio pro should resolve this, but i can’t get video to play cleanly.

Okay, great ideas, but you are shooting yourself in the foot(age).

Uncompressed 8 bit footage has a frame size of 720×486. I imagine that you shot dv, which has a frame size of 720×480. You are seeing the 6 pixel difference on the top and bottom. When dvds get compressed they go down to 720×480. You should remove all of the resizing from your fcp comp so that the frames fit in the 720×486 with the black on top and bottom. When you go to make the dvd, it will automatically cut off the black at the top and bottom as it crops the image to 720×480.

    Make sense?
