  • How to connect polygons extruded from Illustrator spline

    Hello all,

I have brought in an illustrator spline of an outline of an astronaut. It is kind of hard to explain but my goal is to create a rounded surface of the front of the astronaut and use the actual reference photo as a texture material to cover it so that it is more 3 dimensional looking than the actual astronaut photo. I only need the front half of the astronaut to be showing.

I put the spline in an extrude nurb and am using a fillet cap for the front. The front is still flatter than I would like so I thought if I could scale the cap small and move it outward while stretching the rounding of the fillet as well this would give me the curved surface I was looking for. But I can’t get the cap to to connect to the rounding of the fillet and when I go to scale it it scales as a separate piece and the fillet rounding doesn’t move.

How do I fix this or alternately is there an easier way to do this? I’m a graphic artist by trade and this will be used for a lenticular poster. I don’t have any experience with 3D modeling so this is new to me and was kind of just thrown in my lap.

    Using C4D v. 10 I believe.

Here are a few pics to kinda help explain things.

After you convert the extrudeNURBS to polys you need to select all the resulting objects and run the Functions>Connect command. Then run the Function>Optimize command on the object you just created. That should weld everything together for you.

Tried that and it doesn’t work. It makes a new extrude nurbs object. Tried scaling/moving the cap and it is still not attached to the rest and scales/moves separately. Tried it on both the original and the new extrude nurbs object.

Got it to work, something was amiss with the original spline. Resaved it out of illy and it worked. Thanks for your help.
Unfortunately it looked like crap the way I had planned to make it. I guess I will bring in the spline as a template and just construct the rounded convex front part using other splines in c4d.
