  • How to Configure Computer for Vegas Pro 9.0c?

Posted by Ken Bennett on February 16, 2010 at 1:47 am

Since the way my computer is configured with, 2 Xeon processors, 8 cores, 4GB memory, apearently Vegas does’t like it. With all this power, how should it be configured? I have never had any memory issues before with any other program.

    Thanks.

    What is your source video?
Have you adjusted the Dynamic RAM up or down? turned on more than 2 threads in Preferences? Locked it to one thread?

More information about how you’re currently running, information about errors might help.

Using AVCHD as a source has occasionally choked my 8 core system, turning on more threads has helped. Keeping the Project Media cleaned from events not found in the project has really helped too.

Using 32 or 64 bit system?

    What is your source video?

HDV from Sony Z1 and Z7 captured via firewire from Sony 35U deck.

Have you adjusted the Dynamic RAM up or down? turned on more than 2 threads in Preferences? Locked it to one thread?

Started with 500 DR and 4 threads then adjusted to 64 DR and 2 threads. Both cause “low memory” error messages at about 30 mins of a 90 min proj. Haven’t tired 1 thread yet.

More information about how you’re currently running, information about errors might help.

Running Win XP Pro, SP3, Dual Intel Xeon E5440 @ 2833MHz, four 1GB memory sticks installed (Win reports only 2GB) DDR2-FB DIMM, installed Vegas Pro 9.0c 32bit. The “error” simply states “running low on vurtial memory, shut down some programs to free up memory”. I am attempting to render out this 90 min proj to a single M2T file to import into another program.

Using AVCHD as a source has occasionally choked my 8 core system, turning on more threads has helped. Keeping the Project Media cleaned from events not found in the project has really helped too.

Not doing AVCHD. I do have a mix of media in the Project Media which I was trying to clean out. If I remove all media that is not part of this project, that would help? Of course, stupid me, I didn’t set up a file bin in PM for this job. It’s all in the ALL MEDIA or root folder of the PM.

Using 32 or 64 bit system?

    32bit as I said.

We’ve met several timeas at WEVA shows and such. You are one of the reasons I’m moving over to Vegas as my main NLE.

    Thanks.

    Ken,

As we have discussed in your other threads, Windows XP 32-bit limits you to 2GB of memory for any application. With 8 cores trying to use 2GB of memory they can only get 256MB each! This is why you are running out of memory.

Without going into all the details and explanations I already gave you in the other threads, my advice for anyone who wants to harness the power of 8 cores is simple:

    1. Configure 2GB of memory per core
    2. Use Windows 7 64-bit to address all that memory

My workstation has 4 cores and 8 GB of memory and I have never had any low memory problems working with 1 hr plus timelines of HDV in Vegas Pro 9.0c.

Question with that, are you able to access all those threads in Vegas 9 32bit running on a 64bit system? I have a ton of plugins that only work on the 32bit system, and some have not been updated to work with the 64bit version of Vegas…Thanks!

Hi! I recently installed Vegas 9.0c (896) 32bit on my HP Pavilion AMD Turion ultra dual core 2.40Ghz, 4GB of RAM, running windows 7 64bit..and I too get warnings of low memory (even if only like 40% or less of the 4GB used) and the rendering stops.

On Vegas the Dynamic RAM Preview is set to 350MB and the maximum rendering threads to 4.

Should I change those parameters to fix the low memory probelms?

How do you configure Windows 7 64-bit to run 3GB of memory per core?
Where can I find the settings? I have the same issue.
Running out of memory on my Sony Vegas 9c renders. Even when doing less than an hour of .MTS files. I have 12gigs of ram and i7 processor.

My old 2 gig machine took days to render but never crashed on Vegas 7

No, those are the correct settings. Sony fixed some of the low memory problems with the 9.0c update. Let’s hope they fix more with the next update. It’s really a problem with Vegas and nothing you can do about it. 🙁

You misunderstood my post. I was refering to configuring the computer such that you have 2GB of memory for every core. So 4 cores should have 8GB of memory. There is no way to assign memory per core. It’s just a “measurement” to know how much memory to configure the entire machine with.

As I said in my previous post. This may be a Vegas problem that only Sony can fix. I have rendered hour long projects with no problems but then again, I am working with HDV not AVCHD which is what seems to be causing the out of memory problems for most people.
