how to combine 2 avi anto 1?

If y9ou put the two avi on the time line end to end you canprint to tape or render to a new avi, render to a new track as a single avi. Just make sure the format you render to has both video and audio.

I thought I did it correctly- but somehow the total of the original clips (45K) turned into 15 meg file with sound only

the joining of 2 avi files should be kindergarden stuff– the tutorial search sucks for trying to find out how to do the operation

any more step by step details as I am totally lost

There are different kinds of avi files. DV avi probably being the most common and the least troublesome. But many cameras put out other avi files. avi is a wrapper that the encoded file is placed in. I have heard many people stste that and I repeat it often but I am not really certain what that means. But I do know there are several types of avi files.
My bet is that you are missinga codec for your type of avi file. First, what is the source of the file. That may be a clue as to what type it is. Also you can download a free utility called GString that can tell you what codec was used and whether you have it on your computer. That would be a starting point. Or you could use another free program called Super that can convert your avi into about anything you want (I would recommend DV.avi)and may be more user friendly. Hope these ideas help you out.
