  • How to change video previews?

Posted by Erik Mickelson on November 6, 2011 at 9:22 pm

I want to export faster by using Prores preview files. The project is .mts video clips and I would like to change the preview format to Prores 422. The footage is imported already.

Premiere will not allow me to make a new Sequence and change the preview file format. Do I have to start over with a new project? This should be simple.

    Figured it out.

    To make custom previews:
Choose New Sequence, Custom, then you may choose PreRes 422 as preview files.

    Anyone else doing this?

Here is an extended discussion with users and Adobe about my trying to do the very same thing. The bottom line to my experience is
    1. It doesn’t save that much time since when exporting. PrP still rerenders the timeline previews.
    2. Adobe advises against this approach since it involves generation loss.
In the discussion an Adobe person addresses why PrP doesn’t work like FCP and probably never will.

Yup, I’ve resigned to using lower res quicker previews.
THEN, export to AME for the master and deliverables.

I do have an innovative alternative for getting out the sequence that I spoke to both Adobe and AJA about that is a great solution for folks that have to deal with LONG renders that their clients might not tolerate.

“I do have an innovative alternative”

    Do Tell!

Doesn’t transcoding into a usable codec (from AVCHD-Prores) involve a generation loss anyway? That is how we would do it in FCP.

You have to speak to an Adobe software guy about how PrP does it thing that I cant speak to. But choosing Prores as the Preview codec is the first step in my alternative approach.

And this workflow at this point is theoretical, but feasible. Like I said, if you edit either long form shows or graphic intensive projects, the exporting process can involve hours of time. All my professional life Ive worked in client oriented sessions. At the end of a 2 day edit, if I told a client it was going to take 8 hours to export their video, they probably would run screaming from the edit bay 😀

So the solution is this. Instead of spending all that rendering time, I just play out the timeline through a Kona 3 SDI output that is hooked up to a Ki Pro Mini recorder. If the show is 20 minutes, the dump to the KPM is 20 min. and you get a Prores master when you are done. 90 min. movie? Instead of a 20 hour render, you spend 90 minutes dumping the timeline to the KPM. Its analogous to dumping to tape. A process I did for the last 30 years in about every edit bay I ever worked in. There are some unknowns at this point that need testing. And if involves purchasing the AJA product. But I think its a great alternative to the time intensive export process that PrP is locked into for certain kinds of productions.

I’m in the Long Render Camp.
Last movie was 1 hour 28 min. Many cuts and CC. FCP exported rather quickly.
I am trying to switch to Premiere. The same style of cutting and CC in Premiere results in an unbelievably long render process. Has me thinking of Lightworks or Avid now.

Avid has its own issues with certain formats and the AMA process. Research that before committing to it.
