  • How to change the position of the ‘anchor’ of an object

Posted by Nicholas White on April 27, 2005 at 5:44 am

    Hello,

New C4d user, seasoned After Effects user…I’ve created a simple cube and it has an ‘anchor’ in the middle of it with handles I can drag to move the cube along all three axes. The ‘anchor’ fits dead center of the cube, and for most purposes this suits me down to the ground. However, I can think of times where I’ll want to move the ‘anchor’, either within the cube or even somewhere outside it…

In After Effects you can do this by clicking ‘Y’ (pan behind tool?) and drag it into its new position without moving its parent object. Is there such a way to acheive this in C4d? And I’m sure the terminology is not ‘anchor’ in C4d…can anyone give me the correct name for this, and I can do some research on my own about what it is capable of doing?

    Take care,

    Nick

In c4d it’s called the object axis. To move it, make the object editable, then use the object axis tool to position it. Snap settings can be used to snap it to a corner or edge.

If you have R9 you should have a plugin called “Axis Center” on your goodies CD: highly recommended for precise axis alignment. If you don’t have R9 I think you can download the plugin from Maxon’s site.

Related question (I just switched last week from Maya):

The plug-in Axis center. Does that reset the object axis to the dead center of the bounding box? Like Maya’s ‘Center pivot’ command? I wonder why this wouldn’t be standard as part of the app itself.

Yes, it does, but it has a lot of other functions too. Why isn’t it in the core app? That’s a mystery for the ages. 🙂

Well, cool. I’ll get the plug-in. When I read through the whole reference manual last week I never saw how to center it. Then I went back through and scoured the ref again and never found it. Glad I saw this thread. Yes, so strange that something I think would be used more than a lot of other functions isn’t standard.
