  How to capture Linux 1920×1080 desktop video for display on Windows 1440×900 display

  Hi all,

  I’m hoping to demo a Linux app to windows users using a video file of the app in use on the Linux box. Early attempts required cropping in lives and quality was poor on the windows viewer.

  Command line used was like this (might not be extact):

  ffmpeg -f x11grab -i :0.0 -t 20 -s hd1080 /tmp/out.mpg

  I then used lives to convert to a cropped .avi format. This took a long time so I’m hoping that appropriate options would let ffmpeg do the whole thing in one operation.

  Ideal command would achieve following:

  – grab user (me!) specified portion of screen (WxH @ offset x,y)
  – specify duration
  – specify conversion to high quality avi output
  – be suitable for display in Windows Media player

  Appreciate any pointers….sadly I’m find most of the documentation assumes I know much more about this subject area than I do….Amit
