  • How to burn 1440×1080 project to dvd

Posted by Larry Cole on February 18, 2012 at 4:46 am

Just completed my first non 720×480 project and realized that I don;t have a clue how use DVD architect to get it on DVD. First thing I notice is that there is not a 1440×1080 project option. Then I start wondering how this size will play on most TVs. It is making my head hurt.

So a couple of basic questions:

    1. Does a standard dvd player only handle 720×480 output?
    2. Is there a way to burn the 1440×1080 resolution on the dvd so that I’ll see higher quality on my big ole flat screen without going to blu-ray?
    3. This may be a really stupid question but can a blue ray project be burned to a regular dvd if the total size fits on the smaller disc?
    4. Do you know of any references that would help me understand the interaction between project sizes and the final burned product?

    Thanks,

No, you’re stuck with 720×480 max on DVD, regardless of the project size. You have to burn to a Blu Ray disc to get a higher resolution.

[Larry Cole] “1. Does a standard dvd player only handle 720×480 output?”

Yes, a standard DVD can only handle 720×480 with different pixel aspect ratios (4:3 aspect and 16:9 aspect for widescreen).

[Larry Cole] “2. Is there a way to burn the 1440×1080 resolution on the dvd so that I’ll see higher quality on my big ole flat screen without going to blu-ray?”

In general, no. You can format DVD “media” with the Blu-ray format, but you will still need a Blu-ray player to play it back.

Yes. Don’t confused DVD “media” with DVD “format”. DVD “media” is just a shinny disc. You can format it as Blu-ray but as I said previously, you would then need a Blu-ray player in order to read the Blu-ray formatted media.

[Larry Cole] “4. Do you know of any references that would help me understand the interaction between project sizes and the final burned product?”

The DVD Architect User’s Guide has a section on this. Wikipedia is always a good choice. You are limited by your delivery format. If you have an HD TV you should invest in a Blu-ray burner and player. If you only have an SD TV, then stick with burning DVD’s.

Do you mean the file size of the final encoded project? One word – Bitrate. The bitrate that you encode your files to is the primary determinate of the final encoded file size. There’s a few free bitrate calculators online, and the all will give you different results. This is because NO program can predetermine the bitrate settings for your encoder without actually encoding it. The bitrate calculators give you a starting point, but if your video has a lot of action or rapidly changing background, you will need to reduce the bitrate to compensate. If your video is a lot of mostly static interviews, you can get away with a higher bitrate.
