  • How to bring a project from Premiere 5 into Premiere Elements 2?

I’m helping someone who has a project they’ve been working on using premiere 5 on a P3/Win98 PC for a long time. She’s done editing and is now stuck trying to get their work back out of the computer.

The user has a working DVD+/-R drive installed but Sonic MyDVD cannot import DV-AVIs exported from Premiere 5 (either when exported as Pinnacle DVD-AVI or Microsoft DV-AVI: the system uses a Pinnacle 500 card). Even windows itself refuses to play the file saying it doesn’t have the codec to play it. This even after I put the panasonic DV codec on the machine and restarted.

And for some reason Premiere 5 won’t let the user export mpeg-2 files even though it appears on the list of export formats.

I’m suggesting she put her media drive in an enclosure and get a new PC with premiere elements. She can then put the files on the new PC’s hard drive, import at least the exported movie into Prem Elements and then burn that on the new machine. She could also try outputting the exported movie back to DV tape from the old PC as well just in case.

I was wondering though whether there is any cheap way to get a project to come forward as well in case she wants to make changes. Buying Premiere 6/6.5 just to import and export the project file seems kinda costly unless someone can hook me up with a trial for 6/6.5). I think Premiere 5 had some sort of EDL export but I kind of doubt Premiere Elements has EDL import. And I already tried opening her project file in PPro 1 and that didn’t work (computer said it was corrupted).

    Any ideas/advice?
