  • How to blend/add layers to previous layer only?

In photoshop you can take a layer and select “create clipping mask” which makes that layer only effect the one directly below it. In AFX I can’t find a similarly simple method, without pre-composing (which I avoid whenever possible) or duplicating the lower layer to luma-matte the adjustment layer. Sorry if I’m missing something stupid!

    Thanks,

pre-comps would most closely resemble clipping masks in ps. but you can try the set matte effect on the layer you want to ‘clip’ to the alpha of another layer… set the ‘take matte from layer’ to the layer that you want to take the alpha from and usually uncheck the stretch layers to fit option.

there are big limitations to this… the layer will take the alpha from the other layer, but it won’t take into account any of the transformation properties of the alpha layer or the layer that it was applied to, so i rarely ever use it. set channels effect is very similar too, with the same limitations.

i’d say, learn to love nesting compositions….

Unfortunately there is no perfect analog to clipping masks in PS. You can enable the ‘Preserve Transparency’ switch on a layer to have that layer take its transparency values from the layers below it, but this uses ALL layers below, not just the one directly below.

You can pre-comp the layer you want to use for your ‘clipping mask’ along with all of the layers you want clipped by it, place them above the ‘clipping mask’ layer and enable their ‘Preserve Transparency’ switches to get basically the same effect.
