I am looking for a way to bend an elongated rectangle with a rainbow swatch fill so that the rainbow fill curves with the object. I am trying to avoid doing a thousand step-and-repeat slices and making a mask. Is there any way to convert just the fill? (I can always place the object over it in a second layer). Any other means to accomplish creating an ojectively editable rainbow curve would be welcome. I would prefer to have a color-blended rainbow such as the rainbow swatch.

I am using Illustrator CS (v.11). Thanks to all who take the time to reply.
