    Hi everyone,

I’ve been trying to recreate a particle wave animation like you often see in those abstract motion backgrounds — where particles swirl and flow in a wave from left to right, almost like a digital wind trail.

I want to do this entirely in Adobe After Effects, but I’m hitting a wall. I’ve tried using Fractal Noise, CC Particle World, and some masking, but the motion doesn’t look natural or fluid enough. I’m specifically avoiding third-party plugins like Trapcode Particular due to cost.

Has anyone here managed to pull off a fluid wave or swirl particle animation using only native AE tools? Any tips on emitter movement, displacement effects, or how to make particles follow a flow more organically?

Also curious — would it be easier to simulate this in Blender and bring it back into AE?

Looking forward to your thoughts and techniques!

    Thanks in advance.

Hey Moira! It seems that you didn’t read my reply in the other post; unfortunately, it’s not possible to achieve the same exact result without plugins in AE, maybe using real footage of ink going inside water and then using some advanced layering of effects. Blender can do this but if you never used it, some pain is in the horizon.

If you wanna go the easy way, I recommend installing “Trapcode Form” and following this tutorial. if you have 30 seconds of your time, please lemme know if that helps!

You’re right — Blender seems promising, but it’s definitely a steeper learning curve if you’re just aiming for that one effect. I might give it a shot anyway just to see how far I can get with Geometry Nodes or shader-based motion.

That said, I totally get the appeal of going the plugin route. Tools like Trapcode Form or Particular really streamline this kind of effect. I’ll check out the tutorial you linked — appreciate it!
