  • How to add white bars around 4:3 content?

Posted by Ryan Stille on December 8, 2012 at 4:06 pm

Hi, I’m using Sony Vegas MS 11 to edit some video from a presentation. I have a screen recording of the presenters computer, and I’m fading between that and a camera feed of him talking.

But my project (and the camera feed) is 16:9, and his screen recording is 4:3. So when I cut to the screen track, you can see the video. (screenshot here: https://img152.imageshack.us/img152/9595/videoshowingthrough.jpg )

His slide background is white, so if I could add white bars to the left and right sides I think it would look fine. Is there an easy way to do this? If it involves adding yet another track, and then fading between all 3, then that sounds too complicated.

My other option is to use the Track Motion tool and zoom in on the screen recording track. The only problem with that is it cuts off the top and bottom of some of his slides.

    Thanks for any help.

You can apply the Sony Cookie Cutter to the Track to make a white border around all of the presentation slides on that track. Set the Color to White, Shape to Square, Method to Cut away all but selection, Border to 0.333, and Size to 0.5. Like this:

Then save it for future use with a name like “16:9 LetterBox Fill” like I did.
