How to add noise in Resolve 11?
Hi all:
I just finished my first project in Resolve Lite 11, and now I’d like to add a bit of noise to my footage before exporting (in order to prevent banding when transcoding to highly compressed codecs). Until now I was using After Effects’s noise filter, and I’ve been looking for something similar in Resolve, but I haven’t found it. All the posts I’ve seen in this forum about the subject talk about using existing grain footage and adding it as a matte, but they were referring to Resolve 8/9. Can anyone confirm that this is still the best/only way to do it in Resolve 11? (In other words, that they haven’t added some new noise/grain feature that I’m not finding).

They haven’t added some noise/grain feature that you’re not finding. In my experience adding noise/grain doesn’t prevent banding caused by over compression, but rather causes blocks and even more compression issues. you can take your AE noise, and render it on a 50% grey card. Then bring that in as a matte and you could apply it that way in resolve, if you were so inclined.

Anyway, I should clarify that I wasn’t actually trying to achieve a “grainy”/filmlike look, but just adding enough noise to prevent banding, as discussed in this thread:

As they say there, “just enough noise to not be noticeable”.

It will only help you to the degree.
Making gray plate fro AE is good way to test out if it would help you.
So just test it out and it probably would cost you nothing,

There are other ways to prevent banding, particularly in skies and other kinds of solid colors, just by using selective defocus keys. Adding grain to me is a last resort. -
Interesting. How would you do that? Would it imply going shot by shot in every instance where there could be banding and intervene manually? (Because I’m not talking about the cases where you can already see the banding in AE or Resolve; I’m talking about a “preventive” measure, when you have to export your nice, clean images to a highly compressed codec like H264).

Yes, you’d have to do it on a case-by-case basis. Otherwise, you’re screwing with every shot, including the ones that have no apparent banding.I need to make up a T-shirt that says “I Hate 8-Bit Cameras.”

Hi Julan, Can you please tell me how I can render noise on a tray card? is it adjustment layer/Solid layer with an alpha? Also how can I bring it in as a matte.

Specs on the original Canon C300:
My T-shirt stands as-is. (Note the original message was from 2014, and many 8-bit cameras are still out there.)
