  • How to add a SMALL BACKGROUND to text

Posted by Kelden Amadiro on December 26, 2011 at 1:34 pm

Hi. I know how to add background to text, but it adds background color to the enrire screen. I simply wish to add background color to the bottom of a video so the text will stand out better. But when I add a background color now, the entire frame becomes blue. I only want the small part at the bottom where the text is to be blue. Can this be done?
    Thanks

Sure. Use the Mask tool in Pan/Crop to mask out the part of the background that you don’t want.

Thanks, but I have movie studio 9. I don’t seem to have the mask tool. Do I need a higher version of movie studio or pro to do this?

Also I know about cookie cutter but it will not work for me–I need something without a border. Do you know if movie studio 11 has masking?

Ahh… Movie Studio does not have masking; you would need Pro for this feature. What I would do is just use a piece of Color Gradient Generated Media on a lower track from the text. Set the Gradient Type to Rectangle and choose whatever color you like for the first color and transparent for the second. You could even use the Cookie Cutter on a piece of Solid Color Generated Media on the track below.

That’s what I actually did as a temporary fix. But many thanks for confirming this….

You’re welcome. That’s not a temporary fix at all. Lower Thirds are quite often done with two tracks, one for the text and another for the background.
