June 23, 2009 at 2:34 pmHow they did it? Planning, preparation, discussion and lots of work.
There are a lot of things going on. It is a professional news open. In all likelihood, a team of people worked on this. To walk you through how to create this whole thing would take a really, really long time.Is there a specific effect or two in which you’re interested? This looks like a lot of rather basic techniques done well, so it shouldn’t be too hard for us to help.
There have been other threads on BBC news opens such as this one.
– The Great Szalam
(The ‘Great’ stands for ‘Not So Great, in fact, Extremely Humble’)No trees were harmed in the creation of this message, but several thousand electrons were mildly inconvenienced.

June 23, 2009 at 2:55 pmthe first many times I saw these on the air I thought “massive 3D modeling, design,, rendering” but now I think most of the parts were built rather simply in After Effects. It’s the combination of layering and carefully designed transitions that make these look like a complex 3D modeling application was used.
Once you’ve spent a couple of hours experimenting with CC Sphere (look for every tutorial you can find including the crystal globe and light rays globes) you can deconstruct the BBC pieces.

June 23, 2009 at 5:14 pmThanks to all who have made their suggestions. Actually I am interested in both openings. But I think the Reporting Scotland opening actually interests me the most. I did notice, however that Lambie Nairns (the agency who created BBC’s news packages) used a mask/transparency layer for their rings to show the colours (notice that the globe hues are different but same template). Anyway could help me a further bit on this…? 🙂 Thanks!

June 23, 2009 at 8:35 pmIt looks a lot like this project:

June 24, 2009 at 3:44 pmFascinating!
The Revostock project seems to be a huge part of the BBC’s inspiration, for sure, but those twits have the Earth rotating backwards! This is an unbelievably common and totally stupid mistake with globe animations.bogiesan

June 24, 2009 at 6:33 pmI didn’t even notice that before but you’re right. Maybe that project was made in Australia where the earth and the water in your toilet spin the other way.
